Ratchet straps, also referred to as tie-down straps, are designed to secure cargo to a trailer. Because they are constructed of polyester webbing, there’s enough give to stretch the strap tightly over your cargo. Scratch resistant and safe for use on most surfaces, ratchet straps can be used to tie down:
- Cars
- Lawn equipment
- Boxes
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Pallets
Basically any large item you need to transport on a trailer can be tied down with ratchet straps.
You can choose from many different sizes and attachments, from hooks to rings. You can use the rings and hooks to lock into openings on your trailer and vehicle, or you can use them to hook two sets of straps together. Because they are tear resistant, ratchet straps have a high level of reliability especially when it comes to long-distance transport.
Setting Up Ratchet Straps: Step by Step
So how do you set up ratchet straps and get them ready for use? If you need to secure bundles of items, wrap the ratchet strap around it like a belt. If you have a large single load, stretch the straps across the top or end. Place the strap through the loops or hooks, and ensure there is no kink or twist in the strap.
Next:
- Open the ratchet by releasing the catch or operating the lever at the top of the ratchet.
- Thread one end through the lower slot that leads up to the spool.
- Pull the strapping through the top till it’s sitting behind the spool (AKA mandrel).
- Pump the ratchet lever quickly up and down to adjust and tighten the strap. Be careful not to over-tighten.
- Close the ratchet, locking it into position. Tie down the straps to avoid flapping in the wind.
- Check the straps every now and then during longer transports to ensure the load hasn’t shifted.
Loosening the Ratchet Straps
When it comes time to unload, pull the ratchet’s release lever (it resembles a handle). Holding the lever, pull the straps loose to release tension. Take a few tries to practice tightening and loosening the straps before you use them on the road.
